Installing OpenSUSE
Click the image above to watch the video tutorial.
You can download the openSUSE 11.1 DVD below.
If you are looking at this from a Windows computer you will need software capable of burning an ISO Image, I highly recomend CDBurnerXP, it is free, full featured CD and DVD burning application, you can get it below.

Once you have the DVD burned to disk, you need to reboot your computer and the installation will start.
When the installation DVD first starts you need to press the down arrow key on your keyboard to select the "Installation" Option in the menu, you can also press the F key to change the screen resolution.
The first item you will be presented with is the Welcome screen with the License agreement. Click Next.
It will check for hardware devices, then you will be presneted with your first set of options. New Installation is already selected by default, as is Automatic Configuration
I recommend unchecking Automatic Configuration so that you can change settings later in the install process.Click the Next Button.
Click the Next Button.
The next screen you select your Country and Time Zoneand click the next button.
The following screen you can select the Graphical Interface that your desktop will use, I prefer KDE, however that is a personal prefernce and you may choose any of the available options. Make your selection and click the next button.
The next screen is the partioning screen, if you are dual booting you need to pay special attention to this screen and be sure to select the correct hard drive or partition. If you are satisfied with the preselected partitions click the next button.
The next screen we are presented with are User account settings.Enter your "Real Name", followed by the name you want to assign to your user account, and your users password. (I recommend you write down your user name and password and keep it in a safe place.).
Uncheck the option to use the same password for the system administrator.Click the Next Button.
On the next screen enter a password for the administrator account and click the next button.
The next screen will show you the settings that will be applied to the computer, any of the different settings can be changed, I recommend you review the partitioning scheme one last time, as proceeding from here will finalize everything. Click the Install Button. Click the confirmation Install Button.
.
The installation of the Operating system and software will begin now.
When it is finished the system will reboot for the first time.
Because we opted not to use Automatic Configuration we will now have more options and control over how the system is set up.
The first of these options is the Host Name screen. The host name is the name that will show up on your network and how the computer will be seen by other computers.
Enter a name for the computer in the host name box, it can be any name you want. Click the Next Button.
The Next screen is the Network screen, here you can change firewall settings, and or your network cards settings. The defaults should be fine for most home users. Click the Next Button.
On the following screen, you can test the connection to the internet. Click the Next Button.
If the connection was succesfull, it will begin downloading a list of updates available for the computer, when finished you can run the online updates. Click the Next Button
Agree to the Flash and Microsoft Font License agreements, and click the Accept Button.
When the updates are finished, there is a second set of updates that need to be installed, Click the Accept Button again, and run the rest of the updates.
The kernel will be updated and the computer will reboot one last time.
Once it reboots you will see the release notes. Click the Next Button.
Finally the last thing is hardware configuration, it will tell you your screen may flicker while it checks your video card. Click OK.
You will be presented with the final settings. Click the Next Button. Click the Finish Button.
If all went well you will be taken to the desktop for the first time. Enjoy your new operating system.
